The James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center consists of a parent site, located in Altoona, PA and three community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) located in Johnstown, DuBois, and State College, PA. With approximately 600 employees, the Altoona VAMC is one of the largest employers in the area. Duties: The incumbent's Medical Record Technician (MRT) position is located in the Health Information Management Service (HIMS), aligned under the Associate Director's Office of the James E. Van Zandt (JEVZ) VA Medical Center Altoona, Pennsylvania. The incumbent reports directly to the Supervisory MRT who, inturn, reports directly to the Chief of HIMS. The incumbent is responsbile for performing a quality review of patient care documents and assigning codes specific for the type of care provided. The organizational structure is large and complex with hospital based outpatient services, acute medical, surgical, intensive care, telemetry, nursing home care units, home health, community based outpatient clinics, telemedicine and the following Specialty Clinics: Cardiology, Dermatology, ENT, Eye, GU, Neutrology, Orthopedic, Pain, Podiatry, Surgical and Women's Health. The incumbent's primary coding duties are outpatient encounters! and Non-VA (Fee Basis) purchased care reviews, respectively.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship.

Experience and Education:
(1) Experience . Two years of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work, or provides familiarity with the work. Six months of the required 2 years experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAs) needed to perform MRT work.
OR,
(2) Education. Successful completion of an associate's degree with a major field of study in medical record technology/health information technology which was accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) at the time the program was completed.
OR,
(3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying. The following education! al/training substitutions are appropriate in this provision for combini! ng education and experience:
(a) Successful completion of an associate's degree in a field of study other than medical records/health information will substitute for 18 months of the required experience.
(b) Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training, obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision, may be substituted on a month-for-month basis for up to 1 year of experience.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-5

Experience. In addition to the basic requirements, at least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level (GS-4) and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.

OR,
Education. Successful completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major field of study in medical record technology/health information technology or a re! lated degree with courses related to medical record technology sufficient to evidence the core competencies identified.

GS-6

One year experience comparable to the next lower level (GS-5) and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.

GS-7

One year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-6) and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.

GS-8

One year experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-7) for the appropriate assignment area and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.

Certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Professional Coder-Hospital Based (CPC-H) from the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) or credentials as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based (CCS-P) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is highly desired.
